The final this year for the women's singles category had Kim Clijsters (Belgium) and Na Li (China). The most surprising thing was that these two women were the two oldest players in the tournament. This goes to show that age and strength does not matter so much as much as the men's category, especially since these players can use their whole body and momentum so well.
This match was mostly some hard ground-stroking and involved some plans in the change up of pace (fast balls, slow balls to catch opponent off balance) and angles to keep the ball out of reach. It was entertaining to watch throughout the whole match because the intensity seemed to rise and no one could guess what the outcome would be.
My favourite to win this tournament was Clijsters because she is playing better after she came back from her first retirement and seems to be in a really good rhythm when striking the ball and her mental game is off the charts. Thankfully, she did pull out on top to take the championship after three sets. :)
Something else also made this final special. It was a win-win for both players because Clijsters, a mother who had come back after birthing a daughter to jump up the rankings for women, had defeated many great players to win the trophy, and Li Na was the first Chinese woman to reach the finals of a Grand Slam.
How do you think this has inspired the other Chinese girls who have been watching? Also, what do you think this will mean for Li Na... will she retire because she is already 29, or will she keep aiming for a title before she retires?
